Lambda Mu Chapter Herstory

our beautiful charter members

In 1931, an Ivy Leaf pledge club was established at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. However, because we were not granted permission for chartering a chapter on campus, a number of Miami students were initiated into the Omicron chapter at the University of Cincinnati for several years, beginning the foundation of Lambda Mu by having the presence of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. members.

In the years of 1975 and 1976, five students were initiated as general body members by the Alpha Sigma Omega graduate chapter in Columbus, Ohio. Beginning in the fall of 1976, they constituted an interest group of additional candidates on Miami's campus. They then requested for a chapter and finally received approval to found what would be the Lambda Mu Chapter on the glorious Saturday afternoon of May 7, 1977. The Lambda Mu Chapter was chartered by the Gracious Great Lakes Regional Director Madelyn Hairston.

Our chartering members are LaTonya Abercrombie, JoAnn Brown, Sharon Brown, Kimberly Caldwell, Pamela Carter, Carolyn Cooks, Inga Hargrave, Carol Peery, Valerie Raspberry, Denise Shuttlesworth, Linda Simpson, Shari Smith, Verona Smith, Angela Young, Carolyn Young.                  Lambda Mu has developed and continues to have an impeccable reputation on the campus of Miami University, and within the Oxford community. Under the supervision of our phenomenal Graduate Advisers including, Dr. Susan Mosley-Howard, Grace M. Daniels, Sharrell Hassell-Goodman and our immediate past Graduate Advisor, Joya Dillard, the chapter has provided monumental programming for the Miami University and Oxford communities. Our famous annual events such as the Mr. Pink Panther Pageant and MOCK Philanthropies have raised thousands of dollars over the years towards Africare and respectfully. AKAdemics, NPHC Step Show participation, and in-chapter activities for Miami students to thrive on campus have allowed Lambda Mu to establish an unmatched admiration on campus. As our newest Graduate Advisor, who is also our very own Lambda Mu alumna, Elaysha N. Wright, is acclimating very well into her newly acquired position, we are excited for all that we plan on contributing to our supreme organization, the Miami community, and the greater Oxford community.
