About Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

History

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has a very long and rich history. It began on the campus of Howard University, where Ethel Hedgeman Lyle dreamt of creating a sisterhood of like-minded, college-educated women, in a world filled with patriarchy and segregation. Along the side of her, 19 wonderful women believed in her vision, thus creating the first Black-Greek letter sorority on Wednesday, January 15, 1908.

After five years, on January 29, 1913, Nellie Quander led the way in ensuring perpetuity by having the sorority incorporated.
